Summer lovin’ is upon us and its vacation season and the kids are out of school. Everything seems to be going well and you feel like you are just cruising. Why on earth would you seek out therapy now? What could you possibly have to talk about?
What would I talk about?
When things are going good, therapy is often the farthest thought in our minds, but it’s actually a great time to learn more resilience and get stronger for the times when things aren’t so great. When you feel like your life is on track, that’s an even better time to process tough feelings and past hurts because you are healthier to lean into those past hurts. It allows to really process what has been in the back of your minds for sometimes years, without turning your emotions on end because you are already more resilient.
When you think things are going well is a time that that you can be more susceptible to something sneaking up on you. If that happens, if you don’t already have a regular therapist, it can be hard to find a great fit on short notice. It’s better to be able to have the time to consult with the therapist that fits you best when you aren’t in crisis. It can be tough to find someone that matches your personality and the goals you want to work on, so looking now before the stress of the fall and winter can be helpful.
Summer therapy for children and teenagers
For children and teenagers, there may be less anxiety with school out, but the summer is the perfect time to reflect on the previous school year. It’s a good time to process with teenagers if there were things bothering them during the previous school year and any anxiety about the upcoming school year. It’s a more relaxing time for kids to take the time to really focus on themselves and their emotional health without having the stress of grades and tests looming over them. It creates a more peaceful environment to process tough feelings.
It’s good to have support
Also, talk therapy is good for you. Having a dedicated person to sound off with and process goals and ambitions is good business. When things are going well, is also when things can be going even better. For instance, if your relationship with your partner is good, but not fantastic, that’s a wonderful time to work on those petty things that bug you. If you have landed a stable summer job but are still just a little more anxious than you like, this is a great time to conquer that last bit of anxiety.
Therapy isn’t just for people who can’t function in life. Therapy is also for people who want to function at their best. Therapy is also for people who have a goal they want to work towards to improve themselves even more than they already are. Therapy is helpful anytime of the year, but there’s definitely ways therapy is still helpful in the summer.
