Embrace and Express Who You Are
At True You Southeast, we believe that expressing your true self is the best way to a truly fulfilling life.
We also understand how scary doing that feels. That’s why our practice is founded on helping our clients navigate the obstacles they bump up against as they start to embrace who they truly are.
Our founder, Katie Leikam, started True You Southeast to help people make the transition to living more fully as themselves. For members of the LGBTQ community, this transition can be very literal and physical. For some people it’s about finding the courage to express their values and traits openly.
The philosophy of True You Southeast was born 8 years ago when Katie learned that a friend of hers needed a gender affirming letter from their therapist so they could progress in their gender transition. Katie was horrified to learn just how many barriers there were to affirming care. Many of those barriers still stand today. That’s why Katie took a stand and started her life’s work of helping people express and live as their true selves.
Driven by her mission to support others by affirming their identity and helping them step into a more vibrant future, Katie trained as a therapist, and started True You Southeast. Our practice is based on five core beliefs:
We believe in people. We think everyone deserves to live in a way that feels open, lively, and meaningful. Our experience with our clients has shown us how much courage and determination we all have inside us, even if we lose sight of it. We see our role as shining a light, illuminating the strength already inside you.
We believe in listening. We think the simple act of being heard by another person is deeply healing. When you sit down with us, we guarantee you a non-judgmental, no pressure, space to explore your best way forward. When you tell us who you are, we believe you.
We believe life can be different. We know that sometimes just getting through the day feels like a challenge. If you feel that way, you’re not alone – so many of our clients feel similarly when we first meet them. Our clients often tell us that they are struggling with stress or depression and doubting that their life can change. Through therapy, they are able to step out into life with renewed confidence and hope.
We believe in diversity. We work with people from all walks of life. Our therapists are trained in working with the LGBTQ community in a positive and respectful way. We aim to be culturally affirming and intersectional in our approach. We believe you are the expert on your life and circumstances.
We believe in building relationships. Just like any other relationship, the therapeutic relationship takes time to build. That’s why we recommend clients see us weekly for a minimum of eight sessions. Committing to the process and showing up regularly is the clearest path to positive results. Above all, therapy is about building a relationship with yourself, and that takes time, kindness and commitment (all of which we can help you with.)
True You Southeast is a warm, welcoming space for anyone seeking the courage to embrace and openly express who they are inside. We use a range of therapeutic tools to create an approach tailored to each person’s unique needs and personality. Our goal is to show our clients how to create a strong relationship with themselves, so they can create healthier and more affirming relationships with the outside world, on their terms.
