6 Steps To Get To Know Yourself Better

    October 28, 2018

    By Gabrielle Thorpe

“Knowing Yourself is the Begging of All Wisdom” – Socrates

During the course of our lives we spend a tremendous amount of time getting to know one another. We know our family members, friends, coworkers, significant others and so many others that are a part of our daily lives. But have you ever taken time out to get to know yourself? Getting to know yourself is crucial to self-health and can help make you an overall happy person. Finding what makes you happy or different from others. Getting to know yourself can help you control your inner conflicts, knowing exactly what and how your feeling, getting a better understanding of why you are the way you are. This can also improve better decision making and self-control. When you know who you are as a person it can give you the confidence to resist social pressures. A sense of awareness for your own habits and struggles, which can help you empathize with others. Best of all vitality, being who you truly are helps you feel more alive and makes your experience of life easy and more exciting. It’s okay if you haven’t gotten to know yourself yet, you have your entire life to find your own identity.

    Knowing Yourself in 6 Steps

According to Meg Selig, (Author and M.A. Ed. in counseling) in,

“Know Yourself? 6 Specific Ways to Know Who You Are”. She talks about the 6-building block of self-knowledge. She uses the acronym “VITALS”, Which stands for      V= Values, what you value as a person. Such as helping others, creativity, health and even financial security.  I= Interests, what are your hobbies and passions? Activities and things, you do that always bring you joy. T= Temperament, knowing whether you’re an introvert (someone who is shy and reticent) or an extrovert (an outgoing, overtly expressive person).  A= Around the Clock Activities, your biorhythms –  are you a morning person or a night person?  “If you schedule activities when you are at your best, you are respecting your innate biology” – Meg Selig. L= Life Mission and Meaningful Goals, what has been the most meaningful events of your life? This something you are looking forward to. And lastly, S= Strengths, something you’re good at and that you can be proud of showing off your abilities and talents.

    Being More Confident

The better you know yourself the easier it is to have a relationship with the world. Once you do you’ll find that you’re more confident in your self-beliefs. You’ll have a since of natural pride that radiates inside you. Happiness that you can share with others as you get to know them. It will be easier to find people you have a good connection to once you know what you like and dislike. It takes time to completely get to know yourself but it’s never too late. We are always changing who we are, what we like, and what makes us upset or happy. It’s okay to be confused about why you feel a certain way or why something made you mad this time but maybe it didn’t the last time. Never forget to take time out to get to know the real you, you’ll be glad that you did.
